International

The Circolo Parapendio Torino “Velum Volitans” is a club which associate most of the paragliding pilots in the Turin area (even if many of the members comes from other zones). Turin is the host city of the 2006 Winter Olympics, as well as the location of the 2009 WAG (World Air Games)

Founded in 1989, the Velum Voiltans is among the historical clubs in Italy and adheres to the Federazione Italiana Volo Libero (Italian Free Flight Federation).

The CPT “Velum Volitans” is a club composed by licensed pilots. It is NOT a paragliding school. Who would like to start flying with paraglide, obtaining the Italian License (necessary by law to fly in Italy), is kindly requested to contact a school, like the Scuola di Parapendio Peter Pan which operates in our same flight zone and where the vast majority of our members got their license.

Visiting pilots

Foreigner pilots which would like to fly in Italy need to understand and follow some rules (Italy is one of the very few country with a specific law for HG/PG flight). To know more about these regulations please check these specific informations on the FIVL website. Look for the “Foreigners” tag on the left .If you would like to fly in our Club sites, please get in touch with us before coming (see “Contatti” page)

History

The origin of the CPT “Velum Volitans” comes from the need of aggregate local pilots which just got their flight license. A group of 10 pilots meet on Februray 1989 in front of a notary to make the “Velum Volitans” a real thing. From that pioneer’s time, when the wing was still very similar to jumping parachutes, the club has grown up to over 200 members (females are over 15% of the members), having among it’s members several National Champion, interregional champions, member of the Italian National Team (both males and females) and FIVL staff, pilots who has done important XC flights, but -overall- many and many “everyday” pilots which have found in this club a family, where the friendship, the pleasure to stay and progress together has always been a key factor. A good mix of passion for flight and social ambient where everybody feels always good and spend very well the spare time. During the years the members has been an uninterrupted source of ideas and proposals, always ready to accept and realize new things. Starting with The NorthWest Flight Consortium to the C.R.Oc. (interregional paragliding championship), to small, but big, exploits, like the flight from the Rocciamelone (3358 m) on January 1, 1989 to the first flight over 100 Km. in Piedmont (Pierandrea Patrucco, 1995), many high mountain flights in different difficulty. These includes the principal peaks of the Lanzo Valleys and the Mont Blanc group. Many members have been gone to fly in very far countries like Himalaya and Chile (the list is too long to write here). Other pilots are involved in volountary services, and the Velum Volitans, where needed, has always contributed in these initiatives. The Club board provide to manage several activities, first of them is obviously the flight sites agibility, then organizing other things like the quarterly emergency parachute repacking evenings, lectures and seminars specific for paragliding, competition of different ranks, the Club magazine “L’Estradosso” (The Extradox - which today is almost superseded by a mailing list), to the classical things like dinners, BBQ, social excursions. Summarizing all, in its’ still short life (short in absolute terms, much longer if compared with the free flight development), the Velum Volitans realized many things, and many other will be done in the future. This is an invitation to all the local (but not only) pilots to join us in this trip, where just few steps have been moved, but we count to go forward without stops and endless.
